What is now called Carteret was once known as the borough of Roosevelt. The town was formed on April 11, 1906, after pieces of Woodbridge Township were cobbled together. The name switched to Carteret on November 7, 1922.
Carteret was a part of the Woodbridge Township until 1906 when it became the Borough of Roosevelt. In 1922, the name was again changed to the Borough of Carteret.

Before the American Revolution, Carteret was a key point on the eastern seaboard. Since it was located on a direct route between New York and Philadelphia, Carteret was a key stopover between the cities. George Washington even stayed in the town.
